Pricing guide

What is a telecom pricing engine?

A practical guide for broadband commercial, product and technology teams.

The short definition

A telecom pricing engine is software that evaluates customer, product, location and channel context against governed commercial rules and returns an eligible customer-facing offer. It separates the decision about what to present from the application that presents it.

How the decision works

A request can contain a service address, channel, customer lifecycle, available product and other approved context. The engine begins with a base rate, applies segmentation and promotion rules, assigns any controlled experiment and returns a structured offer with a unique identifier.

Input

Approved transaction and customer context.

Decision

Versioned prices, eligibility and precedence rules.

Output

A complete, traceable offer for the requesting channel.

Why broadband operators need one

When pricing logic lives in several channels, changes require multiple releases and inconsistencies become likely. A shared engine reduces duplication and lets pricing teams respond while retaining approval, history and audit evidence.

What it does not replace

A pricing engine does not replace billing, provisioning, CRM, serviceability or ecommerce. It connects to those systems and becomes the authority for customer-facing offer decisions.

Pricing is not rating

A telecom pricing engine determines the eligible offer before purchase. A rating engine calculates the monetary value of measured usage downstream. Compare the complete system boundaries in our telecom pricing engine vs. rating engine guide.
